The Mahle jet ignition thing is already just an augmented torch igniter as
used on rocket engines. Basically a small percentage of the fuel and air
are injected and ignited in a torch chamber at a normal O/F ratio and that
hot torch is directed into the main combustion chamber to ignite the
primary mass flow rate (which could be extremely lean for example to reduce
fuel consumption). The corona ignition system looks to be generating very
high voltages to arc from the plug to the combustion chamber wall rather
than between two electrodes of a small spark gap, this would become very
difficult to do at higher chamber pressures/higher gas velocities and would
be essentially impossible to do in a vacuum compared to a traditional torch
igniter.
