Nova concepts came in two phases. The first Nova concepts were those
aimed at direct lunar missions, some based on very optimistic estimates
of spacecraft weights. For example, somewhere (AvLeak?) I've seen a
1960 article of which Milton Rosen was a co-author suggesting a direct
lunar landing with a "Nova" featuring just four F-1 engines in its first
stage.
After LOR was chosen for the lunar mission, the term "Nova" was applied
to much larger launch vehicles envisioned for the future.
