No immediate observation of phase separation. After opening the needle
valve, I didn't' observe anything else because I had retired from the room
quickly. When I returned, the vessel contained what appeared to be the
original nitromethane with a very slight indication of effervescence. That
scared me again. N2O is a very good solvent with properties similar to CO2.
Little bubbles popping in what may have been a sensitized monopropellant. No
thanks.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just found this while searching for
nitromethane-related info in the archives. One of my very long-term projects
has been to fly a really tiny liquid propellant rocket (Estes Alpha sized,
roughly). I have been thinking for some time about a nitromethane-N2O mixed
monoprop using creamer cartridges, wherein the propellants are mixed on the
pad during the launch sequence: N2O cartridge pierced, pressurizing and
mixing with the nitromethane, rupture disc initiates injector flow
immediately thereafter. It would be very helpful to know how easily the two
liquids mixed. Was there any visible phase separation? Any other notable
observations, aside from your hair standing up when you realized what was in
front of you?

Absolutely nothing. Two colorless liquids just quietly mixing sans any
apparent reaction while becoming sensitized and under considerable pressure.
It could have quite possibly gone the other way.
