My impression has been that he was certainly one of the idea guys but with
scale that's faded. What was Steve Jobs to Apple? Not the source of
everything, but a pivotal element.
SpaceX's next tier seem pretty good and Gwynne (I assume) seems able to lead
just fine. Elon seems to like competent leaders around him not just doers.

SpaceX is big enough and far enough along that they might survive.
The answer to the that questions hinges on how much Elon Musk is the
Idea Guy, and how much he is the Guy At The Podium. Given his ego
and showmanship... it's not entirely impossible that the latter is
the ruling case rather than the former. If that's true (and there's
reason to believe it's not entirely false) then the survival and
continued progress of SpaceX comes down to the new leadership
effectively managing the actual Idea People.
