Anyway, technical medical papers from China seem pretty much
unaffected by politics (except where they get into traditional Chinese
medicine, which the government is big on). There's nothing wrong with
the RNA sequence that the Chinese reported, for instance. It's the
stuff that would make an immediate impact on public relations that
they suppressed or downplayed. (And yes, that includes the numbers of
cases, from which R0 is calculated.) Unfortunately, that's exactly
the stuff that would have been needed to move our own political
needle. R0 is the least of it; if those jerky bootleg videos of
people dying in the halls of overcrowded Wuhan hospitals had been well
authenticated, professionally filmed, and widely broadcast, and if
they'd been accompanied by sympathetic interviews with overwhelmed
doctors on the front lines, attitudes would have been different all
around.

This paper tells the whole story of the search for the COVID-19 virus.
Researcher
at Wuhan Institute of Virology that was submitted for publication November
6, 2019 just prior to the first infection by COVID-19. Published Jan 29
2020. Seems they were refining techniques to remove genetic noise from
testing samples so they could obtain full unique RNA code for individual
viruses, instead of average genetic code of many viruses mixed in with lots
of other genetic noise. Looking for Bat viruses that match those known to
infect humans. Even talks about discovery of CoV in bat samples....
One of these "refined" samples from their bats may be COVID-19, as they
were looking for Viruses similar to SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV.
Quoted from the paper, "Furthermore, the included CoV baits are biased
toward pandemic viruses, such as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, for which more
sequence information is available in the NCBI database. The effectiveness
of these baits for capturing CoVs was only tested on SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV
(15, 17). We specifically designed our library to target major mammalian

Looks like they found what they were looking for.
It's most likely one of the 9 new human infecting bat viruses. Matching
statistics to the original SARS-CoV viruses were 97% for BtPiCoVHKU5
(BtPiCoV-HKU5r), 96% for BtTyCoV-HKU4 (BtTyCoV-HKU4r), 96% for BtMiCoV-1
(BtMiCoV-1r)...

virus and selecting only ones matching.....
Patient Zero is most likely a researcher from the Wuhan lab named in this
video. This person has disappeared, but is claimed to be alive and well.
