Thanks for all the work which must have gone into this
latest update. Does the newWindowScroll module mean that we
don't need to use !HID any more?
Many thanks from me too, and it's installed here. I was wondering about
!HID as well. I use it here and it seems to be behaving exactly as it used
to. I don't have any idea what the WindowScroll module does, in any case.
WindowScroll does part of what !HID does, and brings RISC OS 5 in line
with what RISC OS Ltd were doing with scroll wheels on Adjust/Six. It's
mainly a case of aligning the two OS branches such that developers can
rely on things working the same.
Basically, there's now a fully functional way of getting "extended" scroll
information (ie. info about what the wheel is doing) which applications
can implement themselves. If not, then the WindowScroll module/task will
issue line-by-line scroll events to the application, and the Mouse
configuration window allows you to control the behaviour of this.
There are a couple of instances where applications claim they want
extended scroll info (thus effectively disabling WindowScroll for their
windows), but don't do anything with it. !Store is a culprit of this, and
we'll be sorting it shortly, I hope. Beyond that, you should end up with
overall a better scroll experience, without the need for !HID.
However, !HID really goes beyond by offering per-application behaviour,
customisable input/extra functions, re-mappable keyboard - the whole nine
yards.
So, if you only use !HID for scrolling, it is *probably* not needed. But
really, that's only a small portion of its functionality, and it may
*still* be better. Try it and see.
Best wishes,
Andrew
