I'm presuming this is an i1 Pro 2 ?
If the USB voltage is marginal, then increased contact resistance
as a cable is used can tip it over the edge. Contact cleaner may help.
( The i1Pro2 power design is poor in my opinion, given this
problem. Far better for X-Rite to have used a voltage
regulator that works on a wide range of supply voltage, to
make the instrument operation robust and stable, rather than
highly sensitive to the vagaries of USB voltage levels. )
