Maybe, but it depends what the root of the problem is. For CMYK profiles, the 
default
black point is a neutral gray, or rather a compromise point is located that 
minimizes
L*, while being close to neutral. There is a parameter to set this tradeoff.

This process isn't done for CMY or RGB print profiles, they simply use 1,1,1
and 0,0,0 respectively, and I'm wondering if this is actually the correct
fix for the problem at hand.

With such a black point, the gamut mapping shouldn't need altering.

Is the data set for an RGB print space, or were you using CMYK ?

[It would help if I had an example .ti3 to play with].
