I've always tried to dual license ArgyllCMS code in
order to sustain its development. Nothing is likely
to change in that respect.
But unfortunately I can't afford to work on Argyll 100% of the time,
and so a commercial licensee paying for specific developments
is about the only way that there is likely to be significant
improvements in functionality. The intention would be that
anything widely useful that comes out of such deals would
land in the Free Software version.
But the viability of commercial licensing depends on
people complying with licensing conditions (i.e. the AGPL).
By creating (say) closed source and/or commercial extensions
or front ends to Argyll without a license, the prospects
of further development or even continued maintenance of the
project are noticeably harmed.
