Take for example the little Pico or Swatchmate inexpensive device - and I
just want to take some very minimal number of readings to be able to
display colors so they are in a wide general range like 'Printable Red vs

2 cents:
• Set display to it's most normal mode, G2.2.
• If you eyeball white and think it's wrong, adjust gains to look suitable
• if the display has a dark gray color cast, see if it has bias controls
and also adjust.
• FInd and install profile based simple primaries and TRC characteristics.
The point is just so the system knows primaries and therefore rough gamut.
If you are on Mac and the display reports EDID properly, the system will
automatically generate and apply such a profile.
On Win / Linux, look at display vendor website for a profile. Windows might
locate one and install automatically.
You can skip the instrument altogether.
But if you want to refine and will spend any money on a colorimeter, just
pony up for X-Rite i1 Display Pro Plus. You obviously care about color, or
you wouldn't be asking here, so it will be money very well spent.
A maybe add a tip into the Argyll / DIsplayCal tip jars.
