I guess I found out what my problem was!
If I switch the monitor mode the application displaying the image does not
know about this switch. I have to load the image again after switching the
monitor mode. Then the image is displayed properly and the colours of an
sRGB image are the same in the sRGB-mode and the AdobeRGB-mode, as is
expected.
So I think, my colour management works fine :-)

Hi,
that will be because you have changed the monitor colorspace,
but the operating system & application (the bits that know about ICC
profiles and do the color management) aren't aware of this change -
they still think that they are talking to an sRGB display.
You have to inform them of the state of the display by setting the corresponding
ICC profile for the display, and then (if you are lucky and the application
responds to such changes without having to be re-started), the image
should be displayed correctly again.
