A request from the Mission Control Center restoration Group
Apollo flight controllers, you can help preserve your legacy.
As part of the restoration of the Apollo Mission Control Center National
Historic Landmark, the consoles in the historic MCC will be configured to
appear as they did in Apollo 15. Why Apollo 15? Apparently, more documentation
exists for that configuration. To supplement the documentation and help build
the database for the restoration, the research for the restoration includes
interviews with those who used the consoles, you, the Apollo flight controllers.
The goal is to make the MCC look like it did, warts and all, during an Apollo
mission. Except that all of the controllers just stepped out of the room.
The interview will include questions such as:
• What typical displays were seen?
• What books were on the console or near the console?
• What aids or other items were on the console – maps, checklists, diagrams,
etc.?
• Were there bookcases or file cabinets behind or under the consoles?
• If so, where were those items?
• What personal use items were on the console or next to the console – coffee
cups, ash trays, cigars, pipes, etc.?
• Do you remember any special item you brought to the console for your shift?
Help do the restoration right. Participate in the interviews. Review your own
records. Meet with and discuss your particular console with others that worked
that console. RETROs with RETROs, FDOs with FDOs, TELMUs with TELMUs, you get
the idea.
Sandra Tetley, JSCs Real Property Officer, Historic Preservation Officer, says
she can be ready to have the interviews – at your console – if you are here for
the reunion. Let’s help her get these interviews. Prior to the reunion get with
those that worked on your console during Apollo so you can be ready.
Help get this right, please. For your grandchildren.
Hold your breath and open your eyes -
You were in the room where it happened.
You were in the room when it happened.
Help others feel the dream you made real.
Let’s get right the Room Where It Happened.
