Subject: Restoration Status
Bill, You may send this out to the AFOA
Its been a while since I have updated you on our overall status of the Mission
Control Restoration.
Sandra Tetley, the JSC Historic Preservation Officer , working with the NPS
establish the requirements to restore mission control to the"way it was" the
day we left. The Document is on line if anyone wants to take a look,; Historic
Furnishings Report and Visitor Experience Plan Mission control Center National
Historic landmark. The document was published in June 2015
In the summer of 2017 Space Center Houston came forward with a proposal to
raise the funds for Restoration.
After six months waiting for JSC to get started I wrote a letter to the
Chronicle, and began communicating to state historic groups, Experimental
Aircraft Association and others. The Chronicle Published an editorial. "Save
Mission Control." on December 4. A similar article was published in the New
York Times. Due to the holidays a JSC meeting was slipped to mid January. The
meeting was a bust, the Apollo group was not even able to raise questions.
As a result of the non-meeting I prepared and distributed letters to 27 State
and Federal Historic Group requesting they bring the Restoration issue to the
attention of Mr Lightfoot, the Acting NASA Administrator
The letter was brought to the attention of Mr. Lightfoot the NASA Acting
Administrator, and the NASA Deputy Administrator for Strategic Infrastructure
who provides oversight for historic preservation.
JSC has now established an effective working group that now includes Space
Center Houston as well as my small Apollo team. We are now meeting weekly and
over the last two weeks have made remarkable progress. NASA HQ has assigned the
Federal Preservation Officer to participate in the meetings via telecon to make
sure the effort remains on track. In addition strict access control has been
established to protect the existing consoles and furnishings and assure the
restoration integrity once started.
Decisions in the last two weeks have been made to restore the "Apollo Mission
Control Center NHL" consistent with the National Park Service Furnishings
Document my Apollo team had developed. Space Center Houston has indicated that
they have obtained funding for the restoration project.
While there is much to be done I am confident that we are finally on track. JSC
has assigned Casi Moore as Project Manager, Jim Thornton as JSC meeting lead.
Space Center Houston has Tracy Lamm at meetings
.The Restoration contractors will be the Kansas Cosmosphere and Stern and
Bucek, both are highly qualified in the restoration field and their schedule
supports completion by the 50th Anniversary missions.
I believe we have the team in place with a clear goal that is capable of
addressing any challenges we meet.
The next step will be to address how to tell the story of Mission Control. I
think this will be a much easier project since the JSC "Disney" approach has
been clearly cancelled.
I will keep you appraised of progress and look forward to showing you Mission
Control, the way it was July 20, 1969.
Controllers now working the Restoration are Kranz and Fendell- Top level
working group, Spencer Gardner- Legal Group, KJack Knight and Denny Holt-
Visitor Experience
