The group included officials from the Red Cross, Church World Social Services, the Salvation Army, various religious traditions and others. Out of that meeting a group was formed called the Texas Disaster Interfaith Response (TDIR). This will be a statewide, broad-based network that seeks to promote, assess and coordinate the relief efforts for the next two years. As I understand it, this group will not "run" relief efforts but will try to coordinate them to make the work more efficient and more helpful. Rev. Amy BeVille Elder and Rev. Frank Goldsmith are the volunteer Co-Chairs of this new group. They hope to form "working groups" around the state to further this work. They need your help for the next two years. Here's how you can help: 1. Pray. Pray for the victims of the hurricane, and pray for the relief efforts. 2. Inform. If you are a member of a congregation, please pass along information about the Texas Disaster Interfaith Response (TDIR) program to your congregation, to your denominational relief programs, and to your religious judicatories. 3. Forward. Please pass along the information about TDRI to anyone in any faith group, so that they may be involved. 4. Contact. If you would like to be involved with TDRI or if you have questions, please contact Rev. Amy BeVille Elder and/or Rev. Frank Goldsmith. The initial email address for this effort is southwestwoc@xxxxxxxxxxxx A website will be up soon. Rev. Elder is the Interim Pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Austin -- (512) 343-7858. Rev. Goldmsith is the Pastor of Koenig Lane Christian Church in Austin -- (512) 454-7679. 5. Give. Currently, financial gifts to the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Church World Service and other faith-based disaster response groups seem to be the best immediate form of help. Disaster kits can be compiled for Church World Service and other groups. Volunteers will soon be needed. Relief and rebuilding efforts will be long-term. The Texas Disaster Interfaith Response and others will need our long-term help. Please be in touch with Rev. Elder and Rev. Goldsmith. I hope you find this information helpful and can be involved with TDRI. Tim Rev. Timothy B.
