There will be a need for foundation and framing crews in numerous locations this fall.* * We are currently booking short-term groups for the fall projects (Oct.-Dec.). Booking for winter projects (Jan. -Mar.) will begin in October. The team, volunteers through MDS Storm Aid, arrived Monday and another team arrived on Wednesday. They are working in Braithwaite, mucking out homes and removing debris. Jerry Klassen, Disaster Response Coordinator, noted that the community is still without fresh water, so the Parish officials have provided a fresh water truck to provide water for cleaning out homes. The ERT group is working with skid steers, water pumps and pressure washers, along with shovels, buckets and wheelbarrows. News agencies report that Hurricane Isaac destroyed some 450 homes in the parish and damaged at least an additional 400. Isaac hit on August 29, seven years to the day of Hurricane Katrina. The east bank of Plaquemines Parish, the most devastated area, was flooded with up to 14 feet of water after the gulf-side levee was breeched. Klassen reported seeing houses that were washed off of their foundations and came to rest against the levee. Reports from Diamond, LA, confirm that all elevated MDS-built homes survived Hurricane Isaac with minimal shingle damage. Some homes that were not elevated were flooded. The MDS Ontario Unit is launching a project to receive and distribute the hay. Drought has severely impacted the livestock sector, not only creating a shortage of hay, but forcing farmers to feed hay stored for winter to their livestock now. MDS is working at moving surplus Saskatchewan hay to drought stricken areas. MDS Ontario is working collaboratively with other organizations to ensure broad awareness in drought affected areas, to be positioned to receive hay, and to distribute it in the most effective way possible. Farmers willing to donate hay should contact Ike Epp via e-mail at birwood@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or call the Region V office, (866) 261-1274, for Epp’s contact information. Anyone else wishing to support this cause is invited to donate financial resources to help defray the cost of moving surplus hay. Donations can be sent to the MDS Region V office, 6A-1325 Markham Rd Winnipeg, MB, R3T 4J6, or any MDS Unit. Farmers in Ontario or Quebec suffering from the drought and in need of assistance should e-mail Delmer Erb, edm@xxxxxxx, or call the Region V office, (866) 261-1274, for Erb’s contact information. The US Hay Drive launched by the Eastern Ohio/Northwest PA MDS unit is still underway. Wyman and Marie Miller, MDS Sec/Treas. Eastern Ohio Northwest PA Unit are coordinating the drive. For the Millers’ contact information, please call the Binational Office (717) 735-3536.
