*State Board of Education *

As a sequel to the SBOE Candidates Forum presented on September 28 by the
League of Women Voters of the Austin Area, the League is sponsoring an
information meeting on the powers and actions of the sometimes controversial
body.

Speakers will be:

   - Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network, who will discuss
the statutory and Constitutional powers of the State Board of Education and
its actions during the last few years.
   - Lynn Moak, principal of Moak Casey and Associates and former staff
member of the Texas Education Association, who will discuss the financial
powers of the SBOE in managing the Texas Permanent School Fund, and how
   board members are compensated.
   - George Rislov, of Compass Learning and former director of the Texas
Education Association's Division of Curriculum, who will discuss the
curriculum guidelines process and the limits of SBOE's power over the
process. He will also explain how a new board could undo this year's actions
   by the current SBOE.

Moderating the forum will be League member Susan Morrison.

The public is encouraged to attend and participate in the
question-and-answer period following the presentations.
