I have been speaking at high school classes this fall about Non-Military Options for Youth. We start our conversation with the students by asking, "Why do people go into the military?" One of the answers is always "Adventure." Well, the following story is proof that there is adventure among peacemakers as well. ----- Original Message ----- From: Justapaz To: justapaz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, December 19, 2003 1:57 PM Subject: Kidnapping of Justapaz worker and friend Notice: Sincelejo, Colombia Yesterday, the 17th of December, at 11:00 in the morning Juan Castilla Urueta was kidnapped in Sincelejo, Sucre in the northern part of Colombia. Juan, adult son of the Justapaz and Mennonite Church coordinator in Sincelejo, and another friend were working at a farm owned by the Commission for Restoration, Life and Peace of the Council of Evangelical Churches of Colombia (Cedecol) where food crops are raised for people in situations of displacement. Seven armed men, four in uniform and three dressed as civilians, arrived at the farm, forced the two men into a van and left. We have no information about their whereabouts and we have not been contacted by their captors. It is rumored that the 35th Front of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Jaime Bateman Cayon Front of the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla groups operate in the area. At this point we are making contacts to learn more about the situation and discerning next steps. We ask for your prayers for their safety and release and for wisdom in responding to this situation.
