I went through a local guy that set me up with Total Merchant Services. Was
around $500 for the machine and I pay $5 a month/$.18 per transaction and
1.6% - 3% depending on if its Visa/MC/AMEx/or Discover and whether I swipe
the card or key it in.

Check with your bank. Some banks have "special rates" for thier customers but shop around yourself as well. I pay $24.95/month + $.30/per transaction + 2.59%/per transaction. (If my memory hasn't gone out with my old age!!)
Check with "Card Service International" http://www.cardservice.com they seem to be the largest credit card processing company.
