Have you replaced the thread feed rollers (big ones on the bottom) and inch
rollers (small ones on the top)? If they are the original ones, you may need
to get an upgrade kit from Melco to do all 16, including new feed roll covers.
Sometimes just sewing slower helps too...
And the right backing is always a plus...
