Doris,

Plain and simple, you should not be hearing anything like metal rubbing at any
speed.

Check the clearance between the back side of the presser foot shaft and the
front side of the grabber trap where the thread is held by the velcro strips.
Do this by, while the machine is on, depress your Emergency stop button, reach
up underneath the sewing arm area, grab hold of the silver rod, this is the
Z-Axis shaft and rotate it back and forth. Watch as the presser foot comes
down, that the back side of it does not touch the front side of the grabber
trap. You need to check this in various places by moving the needle case across
the machine. If you find that the presser foot is touching, a very slight
bending of either the presser foot or the grabber trap will be in order, to
adjust for clearance. If you choose to bend the presser foot, you also must
make sure that the presser foot has proper clearance to the back side of the
needles. It must not be allowed to get in contact with a needle while in
operation.

Also slowly rotate the Z-Axis shaft completely around several times and see if
you can locate any binding , roughness, or anything that may be touching to
cause you to hear what sounds like "metal" rubbing.

The machine is a sewing machine and should sound like one. If a noise gets
worse over time than, there is something wrong and should be fixed.

Make sure to go through and lubricate all the rollers, both the red pinch
rollers and the yellow colored thread feed rollers, all of the needle bars in
their respective upper and lower locations, the reciprocator shaft oiling
port(24 drops here), the rotary hook(at least once a day), in short a complete
Premaintenance Inspection Procedure ....the sound of metal rubbing is not
acceptable.
