It looks like a crescent-shaped spring (see http://www.allstitch.net/media/pdf/setup-checklist.pdf). These are the L-style bobbin cases I bought for $4.99 each that work http://www.allstitch.net/product/standard-bobbin-case-style-l-1719.cfm. You'll see they do not have the backlash spring inside.
