Stop the column before the blend starts. Add a new column object where the first one stopped and make it as long as you want the blend to be. Open the properties and select "Effects". check "Custom Density" and then "Blend". Then OK. It adds a new column object on top of the one you created, but you have to change the color of the new column. Then continue with a new column object.
