For a baby it's not so much the backing as the mass of thread and all the back side of the stitching that's hard and scratchy after you choose your backing, you can cut a piece of fusible backing and cover the inside of the design and fuse it over it if possible cut the edges in a rounded shape so there are no hard corners. you can get very thin fusible backings such as the pellon brand at most sewing and fabric shops or places like Wal-Mart and craft stores. This works on other jobs as well that are not just babies. anytime embroidery may be worn against bare skin, this makes an attractive alternative. Give it a try.
