First, our latest video: Blue Tango. https://youtu.be/qeiTCHFGYG8
There are several steps involved:
1. We download an audio file of the music – from the publisher’s website,
You Tube, or other source. There are many. This file is sent to the conductor,
who listens to the audio track and videotapes himself conducting the piece.
2. Our member who does the audio mixing adds a click track (I’m not sure
how he makes the clicks – possibly with a drumstick on a piece of wood) and
counts, and records himself (audio only) saying clap for the next three beats
or four beats, depending on tempo. This is to provide a reference synch point.
If everyone claps along, it’s easy to align the audio tracks.
He puts all the music parts plus the conductor video in a drop box and sends
the link to members. (Here’s a link for you to look at -

<https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7ag49mnlkl7laej/AABJNtcOUvVkuUAdYpi9l7Uia?dl=0>
3. Members download the video and their parts; they are asked to listen to
the audio track with earphones and follow the conductor as they record their
parts – audio only. Some use audio recorders or phones to record as they
listen to the track and watch the conductor on their computers. They then
upload their audio recordings to the same Drop Box – a link is provided to them.
4. The tracks are then loaded into Garage Band – a free MAC app that
allows the multiple tracks to be synched and mixed. Once all parts are mixed,
an MP3 audio file is generated, which is sent to all members to listen to.
5. The next phase is the video mix, which I do. I have a PC and use
CyberLink Power Director. But there are several free or inexpensive video edit
programs for the MAC. I use the video track of the conductor, but mute the
original audio, and replace it with the new track from Garage Band. Then I add
the pictures of members, trying to put the right instruments up to go with the
audio.
It would make a more interesting performance if I could get everyone to send a
video rather than audio file, but that would be more complicated for some
members. We may try that in the future.
In place of our live Tuesday night rehearsal we have a Zoom meeting each week
where, among other things, we discuss the next piece to record. This week we’re
working on the Jack Stamp arrangement of Star Spangled Banner, (I guess you
could do an arrangement of Oh Canada!) and starting next week we’ll do some
holiday music.
Hope this all helps you – let me know if there’s anything else you want to
know, and also what progress you are making.

Hi Bob,
First of all very well done... I can really appreciate all of the time and
effort put into producing these...
And I bet your members had fun doing it too!
I am the conductor of the Sidney Concert Band.
We would like to do a similar type of video.
Since I am very new to this, could you recommend a video editor (I am a MAC
user)....
and would it be possible for you to forward to me the instructions given to the
individual musicians?
And any other advice you could pass along would be very much appreciated.
Cheers,
Bruce Ham

Perhaps a vidoe available of a conductor keeping beat to a recording and let
the players "play-along".
