accessible-iOS Messages in Settings

I need to know under settings for messages, is the phone number or the email
address to send text messages which is selected?
On my 4/s, I hear VO say the mobil number is selected, but it also states
it's dimmed. The email address I use is selected and not dimmed.
So, which is suppose to be the choice here for sending/receiving text
messages? I cannot seem to undim my selection for my mobil number, and am
wondering if, the email is the cause?
