Something like the Netgear DG834 range will be fine. The desktop should have a LAN port that plugs into the router, and the laptop connects wirelessly to the router. As for laptops, they of course have USB ports on them, and you can connect a card reader. They also have in-built card readers. Dell do a whole range of laptops, depending on what you want. I tend to go lower spec on the laptops than on the desktops, but you need to decide on whether it should be a desktop replacement, or to compliment the desktop. If you are using it in the house only then it may be cheaper to get a second desktop? I don't know the anser to any of these, but they are questions you need to ask. As a rule of thumb, whenever I set these up, I find the option in the Netgear utility to allow Windows to control the wireless network, then you administer it through the control panel | networks | wireless networks. When you do this, Windows will manage the connection state and allow power users (what Windows sometimes call standard users) the rights to connect. System is xp pro usb netgear wireless adapter connecting to vigor router. I have created user accounts for each family member. The connection =3D is=3D3D20 reported as having little or no connectivity but the signal is reported as=3D3D20 excellent. I have checked the allow all users to use the connection in the wireless network setup. If I change the account to administrator level, I am able to =3D connect=3D3D20 normally.
