Hi Ron

Copied below is the welcome message I got, which tells you about
subscription details etc.

I hope this gets you going.

Welcome to the PortableMediaPlayerList@xxxxxxxxxxxxx mailing list! Hi, and
welcome to the Portable Media Player mailing list.

Please read and keep this message as it contains useful information on list
etiquette and commands.

The purpose of this list is for the helpful discussion of all aspects of
using iPod or similar products by vision impaired people, including the
transfer software installed onto a computer in order to copy music, films,
applications or spoken word material onto the device.

Although due to the high demand for such a list the primary subject is the
use of iPod products, it is quite acceptable to discuss the use of other
(what we would call) portable media devices, inaccurately dubbed as MP3
players by many people. This includes specialist portable media players,
such as the Victor Reader Stream from Humanware which has been discussed on
this list from time to time.

Finally, we will allow the discussion of accessing stores for the legal
download of music, films, applications, podcasts and spoken word material
within the context of hopefully transferring the purchased audio content to
a portable media device.

This can be a very high traffic list, for example when new products are
found to be accessible or when a new software or firmware version pertaining
to a player is released. In order to avoid high traffic, it is very
strongly suggested that you remember the following points before sending
mail to the list.

1. Most importantly, please let the subject line of the message reflect the
topic. For example, if a reader has asked about a feature relating to a
specific product, the message should not include information about a
different product. Please change the subject line in that instance so that
readers can choose to delete the message if it is of no interest.

Similarly, please do not use ambiguous subject lines. For example, the
subject line of Help would not be appropriate, but
How do I create a Playlist in iTunes is good practice.

From this point we will closely observe the content of subject lines and if
we feel someone needs help regarding their implementation we will contact
him or her off list to give that person assistance in observing subject
lines or staying on topic.

2. Is the message relevant. While it is nice and indeed encouraging to
thank people for assistance they have given, it is probably best to write to
the sender privately rather than have that message go to the list. It is no
interest to the hundreds of other people subscribing.

3. Be civil, do not be offensive.

4. Advertisements of products and services cannot be placed on this list
without the permission of the moderator.

If you are a subscriber to the list, and you find that the volume of traffic
is high, you could choose to group your messages by conversational thread
which can be achieved under most circumstances from your Email client. If
you are unsure how to do this please contact us for assistance.

We do have a web page, which points to useful resources to read and listen
to concerning portable media devices. Visit the page at

We hope everyone benefits from this list. If you want to contact us for any
