Hi David I haven’t got a clue but sometime later I was told to restart my
computer which I did and then the action centre was empty but next time I hear
notifications I will know what to do. Thanks for your help. Janet

Yes – unfortunately not all applications are compliant with the need to put
notifications into the Action Centre.
This is good accessibility practice but there are as ever several culprits who
think they know better and do not use standard windows notifications.
What is the app which is generating notifications?
Sometimes you need to run the program itself to access the actions you are
trying to take.

Wow! This is one of the most useful keystrokes I didn’t know about. Thank you
David.

Generally you should be able to find them, if the program is using standard
notifications, in the Windows Action dialogue.
You can bring this up by pressing windows key plus A.
I sometimes find for some reason I have to press this combination more than
once to get the dialogue up.
Once the dialogue is there you should be able to bring up the context menu on
a notification to take the appropriate action, including stop getting
notifications if that is what you want. I have for example turned off the
constant nagging to update Java.
The problem is that not all apps properly put their notifications into this
area. However the above method should work for many notifications.
