One of the silicon-based lubricants such as are used on bikes would be
preferable to Vaseline. Although they feel as if they are coming off onto
the fingers, in reality the don't.

Carol this is a problem I have all the time, as you dig it into the
pavement the harder it sticks.
When you then come to folding the bloody thing up you have the devils
job to do so.
I have even tried putting vaseline on the joints but after a time it
wears off and you need to be careful it doesn't get on your clothing.
All in all it's about time this problem was resolved in some way.
Also I have weak hands so this makes the problem even worse for people
like myself.
Sorry but this is all I can offer as help
'Take care
