Hi David

The network is protected with a WEP Key. I know this probably would not deter serious hackers, but what would?

I tried out my own USB wireless Belkin adapter downstairs and it works 100%, even with the doors closed. Perhaps this is because we have a good router and maybe a cheaper one would not give as good results? I'd never use a BT hub for example, did once and it ended up on the skip! I will now go and get a second tomorrow and that should be us.

Now all I have to do is get the DVD working!

Barbara

Barbara:

In my 150 year old house on the Kent coast, I use a Draytek router and
wireless card which travels about 25 feet horizontally and through something
like 26 inches of wall.

You will also probably find that there are different power settings -
usually a maximum of 100 miliwatts. If it does work well on that power
level, then you may try dropping it a bit.
Be very careful about the system security.
Hide the SSID, and maybe use WPA2 encryption.

With what sort of range Brian? Like I say, I want it downstairs. Granted it is not a big house, but don't want to be left with weak signals and dropped
connections.

Subject: [access-uk] Wireless USB or card

I posted a message the other day about a wireless USB
adapter. Barry told me that cards were better than USB adapters. I have a
USB adapter in my desktop and it is working 100%. However, I am in the same
room as the router, so that is probably why. I want now to link another
desktop downstairs to the router, so would a card be best for this? And if I go for a card, how easy are they to fit? Is just sight and the instructions
enough or does it require some kind of specialist knowledge given that it
fits inside the PC?

Thanks for all help.

Barbara
