Tools - Options - Advanced.
He needs to go to the Updates tab on that section.
Check the option for "Never check for updates." It will say it's not
recommended, but I've never had a problem with that.
Also make sure that the "Use a background service to install updates"
box is unchecked, which is below the update options box.
