Thanks for this Triss. I've found the separate line in socket by trial and error. Should I unplug the mike before recording from hifi?

Most consumer soundcards have a separate line in a mic sockets. The line in socket should be used with a such items as a tape recorder or minidisc to feed signals in whilst the mic should only be used with microphone sources. This is because the mic socket is very much more snesitive and plugging in something driving line level signal will very quickly go into distortion.

I'm new to the business of recording onto the pc from another device. Is
the line in socket the same as the microphone socket or does it depend on
the pc sound card, and whether it is or isn't the same, presumably you have
to unplug the microphone before you record from the hifi? Would appreciate
your thoughts.
