Ian, I don't believe it is a scam, because David was in conversation with 
Apple.  Are you not reading his messages?

also, wouldn’t Sierra to el Capitan be a downgrade to a previous OS version?  
The true test of whether this is spam would be if there is a link to click in 
the mail message.  But it’s probably best ignored and deleted anyway.
