Hi Barry

Might be easier to throw the thing off a tall building! I would ideally try a System Restore to some time before all my troubles begun but System Restore will not launch for me. It is not disabled, just won't work for some reason. Very frustrating, might just take a hammer to it instead.

Barbra,

When you first turn the machine on, the name of your BIOS EG Phoenix, will pop up with the key stroke to enter it's setup will appear.

here's a list I have for BIOS keystrokes, all BIOS have different Interfaces and I wouldnt' mess in it without sighte dhelp.

you'll be looking for Boot Sequence, boot Order, Boot Management, something like that.

Here's the list of keystrokes to get into different BIOS's.

The BIOS can normally be accessed when you start your computer. You may see a reference to "setup" when you turn your computer on. That's your opportunity to get into the BIOS. It usually requires the push of a function key, such as F10, to get access to it. That "F" key varies between computers. Sometimes
it's the ESC key or DEL key.

If a logo screen - like HP or DELL - is displayed during the start up process instead, then you may want to check with your computer maker for a command to turn off that screen and display the start up information, which is listed when a computer is powered on.

Here is a list of key sequences for various brand name computers. If yours is not there check with your manufacturer or watch for info flashed on-screen when your computer first starts. It may say "For setup hit ..." That's the info on how to get into the BIOS on your machine.

Barbra,

you might try going into your BIOS and making sure that Boot From CD is enabled.

This is called different things in differnet BIOS Systems.

Hi Barbara,

Windows CD's are not tied to specific PC's, however they do contain different drivers, software etc depending on the machine(s) they are designed to be installed on. For example: My dad's Acer machine came with a Windows XP Pro CD. It had all the drivers, and software needed to power those drivers, built right in, so everything worked, straight out of the box. He recently needed to reinstall Windows, however he could not find the original CD that came with his machine. I had a generic XP Pro DVD lying around, so we installed that, however because it didn't contain all the drivers for his machine, we found ourselves in a sticky situation when it was installed, with certain hardware not being recognised, internet sound and visuals not working properly, and other such annoyances. The solution was to go hunting around the web for his model of computer, then find the individual drivers for that machine. I then had to make him a DVD which included those drivers, and then reinstall Windows again with that DVD. It then worked absolutely fine.

I have attempted the Windows reinstall finally. Once I start the PC and insert the Windows disc, nothing happens. I go to My Computer but the CD drive is not showing up. Now, I have a couple of questions:

Do I need to use the Windows XP disc which came with this particular computer? Or can I use the one which came with another computer? So is the operating system tied to the PC it comes with?

The PC I am trying to reinstall on did not come with a Windows disc, so I am not quite sure where I go from here. There are lots of little problems on this PC such as not shutting down, program not responding and so on which are making using it impossible for any length of time. I've tried all but a reinstall, but not sure how to go forward from this point. I am in need of some expert guidance here please!

Barbara
