What about me as an amateur, hope to be professional, technician? Surely I'd need a more powerful Windows than Home Premium? At least that's my reason to go pro anyway.

Don't blame the screen reader guys. It's the retail shops who really
make more money selling Professional Versions of Windows.

For "Professional" you should really read, "Secure Business Network
User".

In the real world, there are very few private users need the extra
build-in security offered by Windows Professional, and even fewer
really understand what it is all about.

OK, the remote access I can understand. But charging to use a pro
version
of the OS - half the time the features that make the OS pro are not
ones
which the average joe blogs is going to use on a daily basis anyway!
And
often, machines with high tech specs will come with a Pro OS supplied.
So,
the user is penalised just for that?

Also, what is a pro OS now anyway? One could say Vista Business or 7
Enterprise is a pro OS compared to Vista or 7 Home Premium, or is the
pro
just for the top version of the OS, i.e. Ultimate?

It just allows you to use the "pro" versions of the OS. You can also
buy
add-ons like Remote Access and Tandem Direct, which, according to the
documentation, cannot be bought using the standard license.

Hi,

What! Jaws charge for the pro version? Can anyone give a non-Jaws
user a
quick rundown at what the Pro version contains that would cause
someone to
want to fork out extra? Oh, and how much more?

Thanks.

I don't recall an extra charge for a 64-bit operating system as far
as
JAWS
is concerned. There is still the extrra charge for JAWS
professional. The
32

and 64-bit versions come on the same dvd and the installer
determines
which
is needed.

Hi Adrian,

Only if you are using JAWS. Window-Eyes and System Access don't
care now
whether you are 32 or 64 bit, it just all comes on the CD in the
case of
WE,
and a download in the case of SA. It is only JFW that perpetuates
this
charging for your operating system type.

All the best

Steve

Seems the tosh satellite t130 and t110 ranges both come with win 7
64 bit
so
may be the cost of a screenreader upgrade in addition to the price
of the
machine.

Hi Denis,

It's not usually hard disk capacity that suffers, but things like
DVD/CD drives, which in turn help keep the overall size down..

I've got a Toshiba Satellite T130 which has 2 GB of memory (and can
take 1GB more), a 256 GB hard drive, wireless, Bluetooth and even a
web cam, Windows 7 Premium, and weighs just over 3 pounds.

And it cost just under £400 including VAT.

George.

Hello All,
Could anyone with experience of notebooks weighing a few pounds
please
recommend one?
I possess a Samsung N120 and like it a lot but it is still too
heavy
for me
to tote around and use on the lap for long.
Presumably you have to sacrifice hard disk memory for the lower
weight?
Memory is important as I am a user of a number of client software
programmes
and Jaws etc. I would like a notebook to ensure the keys are large
enough.
Regards,
Denis
