Billy,
cable companys don't provide you with a router.

They provide you with a cable modem.

You can buy your cable router and hook it onto the cable modem.

DSL companys seem to provide a router/modem combo with your subscription.

Tristram, In my own case, my cable company, which was Telewest, before it
was taken over by Virgin Media.
Didn't provide any type of routers at all.
I was told by a telewest customer support person, that the company at one
time provided such routers, but not anymore.
I don't know if this has changed in anyway, since the take-over. I would
like to know though,
Billy

Any service that is carried by a BT line requires an ADSL modem or router
which are possibly the most common type of connection. If your service is
carried by Virgin or some other provider then you will need a Cable Router.
In the latter case it may be a question of asking the service provider, I
believe that in the latter case also that equipment is normally provided
unless specifically you have chosen to do your own.

  Hi all,

I'd like to ask another question about routers and, in particular about
those suitable for Cable (Virgin Media) and those you need for BT/DSL.

I didn't know that the bulk standard router (recommended so highly by
Steve
and which I love) was not suitable for another person's needs and of
course
went ahead and recommended it . . . and nobody made comments about its
  suitability . . ..

Please enlighten me, so that I don't fall into that trap again. Tell me
how
people know which routers they can use and something about the
difference -
but please keep it simple because that's how I operate!

  Thanks!
