[access-uk] PC Slow To Boot - XP SP2 Problem?

Hello,

A friend of mine has just re-formatted his PC (an Athlon 3.2 running
Windows XP Pro). He installed the operating system, then SP1 from the
Microsoft CD which was made freely available a couple of months ago, and
then XP SP2, which he downloaded from a link posted to this list last week.

His PC is now extremely slow to boot, taking several minutes before XP is
fully loaded and ready to go. We're at a bit of a loss as to what to try
next, but have come up with a few possibilities, and if anyone has any
ideas apart from what's listed below, or feels that one suggestion is more
likely to work than any other, please let us know. The possibilities are:

1. Look for a BIOS upgrade.

2. Re-install Windows XP Pro, leaving out the SP1 from the Microsoft CD
and just going straight to SP2. This assumes that SP2 can be installed
onto an OS which doesn't already have SP1 present - I'm not sure whether
this is possible or not.

3. Look for an upgrade to his sound/video drivers. These drivers are all
Nvidia and they're all installed together, so if one of these is causing a
problem, it's going to be difficult to determine which is the culprit.

4. Run some diagnostic checks on the hard disk (a Maxtor 120 gb) to see if
there are bad sectors or any other problems.

I know when XP first came out and people were moving from 98/ME, it was
always recommended to have a clean install of XP, rather than installing it
over the existing OS, and I'm wondering whether the same could be said of
SP2 - if it's better to install it over a clean OS without SP1 already
being present.

Thanks,

Caroline.
