Hi, I run a WhatsApp group called "Fitness and exercise." You, or
anyone else would be welcome to join. I'm sure we could answer all of
your questions.

Hi, I use a local authority gym like Jo and have had the same experience,
which is to say, pretty good. After going through the induction I now just
turn up and someone will guide me to each piece of machinery. If I want to
do a full weights session I tend to book a session with one of their
trainers which doesn’t cost anything. I try to use free weights as much as
possible as they can do all the machine exercises from the comfort of the
same bench. When I first went to the local gym I met a staff member who
told me I wouldn’t be allowed to enter the gym without a guide as I wouldn’t
be safe and the staff weren’t there to support me. I went home and called
the leisure office of my local council and cheerily asked for advice as
their local gym wasn’t accessible for disabled people. I sat back and
waited…it took about 30 minutes for someone to call back and insist I can
turn up when I like and that the staff are there to help me. I then
received an apology from the gym manager who couldn’t be more helpful. A
strange start but I must say I haven’t had a problem ever again and I have a
great relationship with the staff now.

Karl

I use a local authority gym in a leisure centre. The staff set up the
machines as they all seem to be touch control now. Once they are set I
can increase or decrease speed, tension etc. I tell them how long I want
to be on that piece of equipment and then they leave me to it and come
back when I want help getting to and setting up the next piece of
equipment.

Subject: [access-uk] OT: Access to the Gym
Hi
I know this is slightly off-topic, and so if you would rather reply off
list to reduce avoidable list traffic, that is fine.
I was wondering about people’s experiences in regards to accessing a
mainstream gym when blind. Do they generally insist upon a sighted person
accompanying you, or are they willing to allow you to go independently?
Any other things I should be aware of?
Thanks
Kelsey
