I keep telling my dad to get in touch with his provider but, foolishly, I 
didn't think of ringing mine.  Thanks for the advice.

I'm presuming he's not abroad?

Maybe you should both ring your mobile providers. I really hope I haven't
told you a load of rubbish and apologies if thats what I've done. Hopefully
someone else will come in and either confirm or refute what I've said.
