Hello,

Can anyone try and help me understand how JAWS works with tables where
cells have been merged?

I have a table a sighted person helped me create. There are 6 columns
but while all 6 have contents for the top 2 rows, for several rows
under that the first column does not need contents in it. When the
person created the table I heard him do something to do with merge
cells but I'm not sure exactly what.

So in the top two rows when I move around with Alt Control left and
right JAWS says "column 1 of 6", "column 2 of 6" etc and I can get
into all of the cells. But from row 3 onwards when I move around JAWS
says "column 2 of 6", "column 3 of 6" etc, but I cannot move into the
first column. If I am in column 2 and press Alt Control left JAWS
says "start of row".

This must be something to do with the merging of the cells but I don't
know exactly what merging the cells means and I don't know how to sort
it out so that I can later get into the first column. Because in the
6th row I need to enter text into the first column but I can't get
into it. Can anyone help me understand what's going on and how to fix
it?

Thanks,
Catherine
