I remember many many years ago when I first left college and got a job as a
shorthand typist in a removals, shipping and transport company how amazed I
was at the spelling of some commercial names. This was brought to mind
recently when last week we were in Lincolnshire and my husband commented on
some of the company names on lorries we passed where words which usually
ended with an e, dropped them, like whistl - I guess it is all about
catching the eye - which passes me by completely of course!

I'm all for a bit of Hungarian script, as it often shorts out screenreader
pronunciation. When I once trained in writing Visual Basic, the trainer said
that Hungarian Script was the name they gave to capitalisation within groups
of words joined together as one. Compare the effect of initial caps on
screenreaders with Hungarian script in the following:

And, although I find capitalisation in Braille really irritating, it is true
to say that there are some things I was unaware of until I read Access IT -
I think the examples I'm thinking of are VoiceOver and iPod and iPhone - I
have always capitalised the initial letter when writing these.

There is absolutely no requirement to include emphasis of any kind in UEB,
unless it is relevant.
This is something which transcribers and braille producers need to address
properly, and probably needs some formal guidance from UKAAF.
I can state quite categorically that Duxbury has options to ignore italics,
bold and underline as well as language flags.
That said, we do need to take care with certain types of document, such as
examination papers, where they may say something like, "Explain the meaning
of the words in the following text which are shown in bold."
In books, often something like a ship's name will be italicised throughout,
and yet it is not uncommon to italicise a word which is stressed when
spoken.

I don't like the changes and feel quite annoyed about the high-handed way in
which they have been introduced but I'm not going to take part in this
petition because I feel it is too late. I do in actual fact see the reason
behind many of the changes and although I might not like them, I do accept
that in time I will get used to them but I think a more relevant petition
might be to braille publishers for them to use common sense in that I don't
want my publications full of italics, boldfacing and other symbols which
just slow down my reading speed.
I also would prefer my material non-capitalised but I feel this petition is
just spitting in the wind - the decision has been made and I fear we will
just have to learn to live with it.

It's a bit like students and the like looking for feedback on IT projects
they are trying to develop, or for thesis particularly for the blind in mind
and you never never hear any outcome afterwards.
