hi steve,
to change the hand writing option between lower case, upper case,
punctuation, and numeric you just swipe up or down with two fingers.
you can also do the same thing if you are in an edit box and it
mis-recognises the character you want to enter to see alternative
characters.
if you have it set to lower case it will still recognise you drawing a
capital letter but will enter it in lower case.
