Hi Andy.

Someone on the apple forums was having the same problem as you. I'm pasting the sollution that worked for the person below with a link to the thread.

Okay, after a couple of hours research, this is the solution that seems to be working for me at the moment:

Open itunes (don't plug in the ipod). Go to preferences, devices(?) and turn off the automatically sync ipod option. In the advanced tab, reset sync history. I also turned off all features in all tabs asking to search for external devices (such as apple tv). Apply these changes.

Now plug in your ipod and wait for itunes to recognise it. Click on the ipod in the side menu and manually sync it (using the sync button). Itunes should now backup the ipod and sync without becoming "stuck". Then go back into preferences and turn the automatic sync option back on.

Hope this will be of use to anyone else with the same problem.

Hi all -
When I now hook up my iPod touch to my laptop, and ITunes opens, there is a problem, it says that syncing is taking place, but I seem to have lost all my books and music from my IPod. If i look at my library under sources, I can play the music and books listed there, but when I go to device, and look at the same music or books on the IPod, all appears to be there, but when I hit enter on anything, it says "invalid location." I have been doing some maintenance on this machine, and maybe I've stopped a piece of Apple software from running automatically, but maybe not, as I've looked in services, and at start up apps, and all Apple entries in both lists are set to start at boot up, or after I've reached the desk top. Anybody know what may be causing the above, clearly the music and books are in the my library, and they are still there on the IPod as a list of titles, but nothing plays on the IPod. Incidentally, I'm sure the music hasn't physically been removed from the IPod, as it's capacity is still showing where it was when things played ok, so why this "invalid location" error?
Thanks -
Andy
