Cool! Well I could save up for google home then cos that will make a lot of
sense when using chromecast even though I got Alexa. Something to think about
anyway.

It also apparently will soon recognise up to six voices in a family and only
respond to those voices. Way cleverer than Alexa.

Hi:
I bought a Google Home smart speaker this weekend. Here are my first
impressions, and some comparisons to the Amazon echo I got a while ago.
Setup was easy using the Android Google Home app. This is simple, fully
accessable and easy to use. The speaker has to be associated with your
Google account so it can access everything Google knows about you.
In hardware terms, the Google Home is about the same diameter as the Echo,
but a lot shorter with a sloping top. There are no buttons but the top is
touch sensetive. Tap once to activate, drag in a circkle to control the
volume. According to my sighted family, the blinkenklights are better than
the Echo's, and the speaker is better looking and more ergonomic. There is
no external speaker socket,but chromecast devices make that redundant. The
speaker also acts like another chromncast device, so you can cast music from
your phone to it.
To my cloth ears, the Google Home sound is better than the Echo's. Its
louder and has better bass. It has more accurate speech recognition than
Alexa. Its way better at recognition when music is playing, even with the
volume set to 11.
Google Home's skill set is more limited than Alexa's. Its integration with
chromecast devices is good, but it doesn't know how to run iplayer or even
Google Movies on the TV. It does integrate well with Netflix though, which
is a little strange. Google Music integration is good, and it knows how to
play Radio 4. BTW, "skills" aren't installed, they're made available
automatically. Queries and searches are much better than Elexa's, which is
not surprising given that Google's search engine is behind it.
I have no HA kit so I have no idea how well this works.
In conclusion, I think this is a better bit of kit than Amazon Echo.
Google owns me, and it knows more about me than Amazon ever will. Conspiracy
fantasists may not like this, but I think it makes Google Home smarter and
way more useful. And besides, its £20 cheaper, and doesn't shove Amazon
Prime down your throat every chance it gets.
