Hmm I don't use apple products so it's hard for me to rigure out how or why the documents behave in the way you describe. Hopefully there are other apple product and google drive users on here who may be able to help.

Hi. I'm using the Google Drive app on my iPad. I discovered that Google Drive had much more available storage space than my Dropbox account and I thought I'd give it a go. I can read documents as long as they are not in edit mode.

I haven't use it in ages, but what it seemed like was that rather than opening documents in it's original format, google drive would open documents in a sort of google docs type view. I don't know if this is still the case, but that would be the reason. What platform are you using the drive on when you try to view those documents?
