I've replaced the drive now, old one smashed up and binned.

In all probability, it is not the hd in the external enclosure that is going
south but the hd controller in the enclosure.
however, this is a good time to make a backup just in case. You ought to be
able to buy a new enclosure - you can get a decent one from like US$20 up -
and transplant the disk into the new enclosure.
