Most of the laptops you buy come with an operating system that is tied to the
laptop itself via the BIOS string and therefore never actually need to be
activated at all. Retail and generic OEM versions however do have to be
activated, they usually give you grace period of about 30 days before
requesting activation and seizing up. Some lower end non-big name affairs may
use an OEM Windows which require users to activate. It would seem odd
therefore that it sh ould do this after six months having worked correctly.
Your friend may need to go back the wording of the error message being given,
the Windows Genuine Advantage software that installs onto Windows via update
check to see if there is a valid license key, if not it can display a message
to the effect the user has a suspect copy of Windows and be offerred to trade
up to a valid license at reduced cost.

  Subject: [access-uk] Expiring Operating Systems

A friend was telling me yesterday he bought a new laptop six months ago and
suddenly the os has stopped working as the evaluation time has expired. He
is adamant this is the way Microsludge now operate but my view is he never
activated the program so it's stopped working until he does.

Can anyone throw any light on this please.

  Roger

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
