Yeah, I did a similar thing myself, but it was once I got into the 
connection settings that I came unstuck.  I would have thought that a 
hotmail account could be set up this way, as it's just like webmail.

I have e-mail set up on my phone but I do not have hotmail.  I use POP3
accounts for my BT and Gmail.  I set this through Messaging once I set up
the e-mail account, i.e. the Mailbox.  Once the Mailbox is set up, I go in
to it, e.g. I call one, my BT one Eleanor, I then go in to the Mailbox
Eleanor and then to settings to configure.  There are various settings,
connection settings etc, see how you get on with that.  I really do not know
though if hotmail can be set up in this way.
