Hi George,
Many thanks for the mention of your review of my book. I intend using that, and
a couple of other reviews when I approach alternative publishers to the current
one I have a contract with. I only found out about 6 months into that contract
that their publicity effort for the book only lasted for 6 weeks after the
publication date. Any extra posters or publicity materials had to be paid for
in addition to my initial fees.
When I approached a well known book store the manager told me quite bluntly:
"If you're not famous or have a 'kiss and tell' story your book will never
appear on our shelves" and from the Chief Executive of that same group of
stores who spoke on a television debate about publishing:
"We spend between 50-70% of our budget on famous peoples' books, even though
many are poorly written before we consider taking a chance on new authors"
Ian Rankin was interviewed on a morning chat show a few weeks ago and he said
it wasn't until he hadwritten and submitted at least 9 books that his work was
finally recognised.
I've tried to join various book and creative writing clubs in the past but
once they found out about my sight difficulties no further contact was made by
them.

Hi Jim,
It was with complete sincerity and truth, when I said, "Last night was no
exception when I started reading 'Ghostly Witnesses'. I finally turned off the
bed-side light at 3am this morning and cannot remember when I last read a book
from cover to cover".
I'm no expert, but do a great deal of reading on my Kindle, which goes
everywhere with me, and I meant what I said above. My unqualified opinion is
that you somehow need to address the publicity side of things. If people don't
know about it - they can't have the option to read it.
I'm afraid I know nothing about publishing books, but perhaps you need to
make contact with someone who can help with more publicity.
I'm certainly looking forward to the next in the series.

Hi Steve,
There is one small point I did not make in my first message, I am already
donating 50p for every format of my book sold since15 October to the Blind
Veterans Association. If I can get my next 2 books in the trilogy published and
start making a profit I would hope to donate to both UKvise and BCAB. It is not
a case of being unwilling to help other good causes, I simply do not have the
time or monetary resources to do so at present.
Whether I will be allowed to sell advertising space on the next book could
determine the future of my writing career.
Regards.
Jim

Hi Jim,
Trouble is as I see it, if you don't want to give anything back, that's
fine, but then it becomes modern day begging doesn't it?
All the best
Steve

Hi List,
Apologies if this not a relevent subject.
I wondered if anyone on this list has any experience of working with, or
using Crowd Funding organisations. I am looking to reserect my writing career.
Sales of my first book have not been as good as expected so I was toying with
the idea of seeking crowd funding as a way of getting funds. The companies I
have looked seem to involve a lot of work and being drawn into promises to help
other organisations which I don't want to become involved with.
Perhaps this is the wrong attitude to have, so your comments, however
negative, will be welcome.
Jim Williams.
