The State Education Department is currently seeking candidates for the
position of Deputy Commissioner for Vocational and Educational Services for
Individuals with Disabilities.  The incumbent will be responsible for
administering
special education, vocational rehabilitation, and independent living
programs for
New York State and will serve as State Director of Special Education and
State
Director of Vocational Rehabilitation.  In addition, the Deputy Commissioner
provides administrative oversight for the New York State School for the 
Blind and the New York State School for the Deaf.  The Deputy Commissioner
provides direction to a staff of over 800 professional and support employees
located
in 22 regional offices.  The Deputy Commissioner reports to the Commissioner
of
Education, is a member of the Agency Leadership Group, and works closely
with the Board of Regents, which oversees education, cultural institutions,
and
the professions in New York State.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  This position is in the exempt class and serves
at the pleasure of the Commissioner of Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:    Candidates should have senior level
administrative experience, including responsibility for a major complex
office or
institution in education, vocational rehabilitation, or government.  A
thorough
knowledge of special education and/or vocational rehabilitation is
essential.
